Kryptonite U-Lock Review for Delivery Riders: Evolution, Series 2, and New York Compared

You already trust Kryptonite. The question is which model to buy. I have run the Evolution Mini 7, the KryptoLok Series 2, and the New York Fahgettaboudit Mini on real delivery shifts across different risk environments and this review gives you a direct comparison so you can stop second-guessing and order the right one.

For the broader buying decision across all U-lock brands, see the Best Bike U-Lock for Delivery Riders - 2026 Buying Guide. For a full standalone review of the New York model, see the Kryptonite New York U-Lock Review - Worth It for Delivery Riders?

Quick Comparison: Three Kryptonite Models Side by Side

ModelShacklePriceWeightBest Delivery Use
New York Fahgettaboudit Mini18mm$110-$1504.55 lbsHigh-risk cities, e-bikes, longer stops
Evolution Mini 713mm$70-$903.1 lbsQuick stops, lighter carry, moderate-risk routes
KryptoLok Series 2 Standard13mm$40-$65~3.0 lbsBudget-conscious riders, larger reach needed

The New York Fahgettaboudit Mini

Price: $110 to $150. Available at Kryptonite direct, REI, and Amazon.

The Fahgettaboudit Mini is the most secure portable U-lock Kryptonite makes and it is the one I reach for when the bike will be unattended for more than 15 minutes in a busy commercial block. The 18mm MAX Performance steel shackle defeats the bolt cutters that handle thinner locks without much effort, and the double deadbolt design means a thief has to attack two locking points rather than one. The disc detainer cylinder is meaningfully harder to pick than the pin tumbler cylinders in the Evolution and Series 2.

The 3.25 x 6 inch inner opening keeps empty space tight, which removes the leverage room that hydraulic spreading tools need. That compact geometry is intentional and it is part of why this lock performs differently than something with a wider opening at a similar price.

Kryptonite's Anti-Theft Protection covers up to $5,000 on registered New York locks. Register the serial number the day you buy it. If your bike is your income that registration costs nothing and covers a real risk.

The one thing I don't love: 4.55 pounds is noticeable on long-distance segments. I carry this on a frame bracket and accept the weight because the security gain is real. On lighter suburban routes where stops are quick and risk is lower, I reach for the Evolution instead.

The Evolution Mini 7

Price: $70 to $90. Available at Kryptonite direct and Amazon.

The Evolution Mini 7 is the lock I use most often. It is light enough to carry all day without noticing, the 13mm hardened shackle stops bolt cutters well enough for the majority of delivery stop scenarios, and the compact Mini size threads through a rear triangle quickly. On most urban routes where I stop for 5 to 10 minutes outside a restaurant, this is the right balance of protection and practicality.

The Sold Secure Gold rating on most variants confirms the security meets a tested standard, not just a marketing claim. The bracket included in most bundles is usable and holds the lock without rattling, which is more than I can say for some budget options.

One thing to note on buying: the Evolution Mini 5 still appears in Amazon listings at reduced prices. The Mini 7 has a better cylinder. If you see the Mini 5 at a significant discount it is not a bad lock, but buy the Mini 7 when it is available at a reasonable price.

The one thing I don't love: 13mm shackle against determined bolt cutters or sustained leverage does not perform like the 18mm Fahgettaboudit. For short stops in moderate-risk areas it is fine. For longer unattended periods in known high-theft blocks, step up to the New York.

The KryptoLok Series 2 Standard

Price: $40 to $65. Available at Kryptonite direct and Amazon.

The Series 2 is the budget entry point in the Kryptonite lineup and the reason I kept using Kryptonite when I first started delivering. It stops opportunistic theft and the 4 x 9 inch inner clearance is larger than the Mini models, which means it threads around thicker posts and awkward racks faster when you cannot position the bike precisely.

The honest trade-off is cylinder quality. The Series 2 does not use the same cylinder design as the Evolution or New York models and it is more susceptible to picking by someone who knows what they are doing. For most delivery stop scenarios the real threat is a bolt cutter, not a pick, so this matters less than it sounds. But in high-theft areas where organised theft is common, the cylinder difference matters.

The one thing I don't love: the larger opening cuts both ways. More clearance for awkward anchors also means more empty space for leverage attacks. Use the full inner clearance only when the anchor forces it, and position the bike to keep the shackle as tight as possible.

How the Three Models Compare for Delivery Work

Cut resistance. The New York 18mm shackle is in a different category than the 13mm on the Evolution and Series 2. Against common bolt cutters the Fahgettaboudit holds significantly longer. Against handheld angle grinders the difference narrows but the New York still takes longer. For 5-minute quick stops the Evolution's 13mm is adequate in most environments. For 20-minute or longer stops or for high-value bikes in high-risk areas, the New York is the right answer.

Carry weight. The Evolution at 3.1 lbs is the clear winner for long distance routes. The New York at 4.55 lbs is manageable on a frame bracket but you feel it by hour six of a long shift. The Series 2 is close to the Evolution in weight.

Cylinder quality. New York first, Evolution second, Series 2 third. Against picking the difference between the New York and Evolution is meaningful. Against picking the difference between the Evolution and Series 2 is real but less critical for the opportunistic threat most delivery riders face.

Inner clearance. The Mini models (both New York and Evolution Mini 7) share the same 3.25 x 6 inch opening. The Series 2 Standard's larger 4 x 9 inch opening makes it faster on thick posts or wide racks but introduces more empty space for leverage.

Price. Series 2 at $40 to $65, Evolution at $70 to $90, New York at $110 to $150. The step from Series 2 to Evolution is the most impactful jump in real security for the money. The step from Evolution to New York is meaningful but the premium reflects a genuine capability difference, not just brand tier.

Which Model for Your Situation

High-risk city environment, stops longer than 15 minutes, or e-bike with high replacement cost: New York Fahgettaboudit Mini. Register it for the theft protection program immediately.

Moderate-risk routes, quick stops under 10 minutes, want lighter carry across a full shift: Evolution Mini 7. This is the lock that covers most delivery riders most of the time.

Budget is the hardest constraint, moderate-risk area, stops are short: KryptoLok Series 2 Standard. It deters the opportunistic threat that ends most bikes' lives at a price that makes sense when you are starting out.

E-bike with a removable battery: New York model as the primary, paired with a short cable to secure the battery to the frame on any stop longer than a hand-off.

Accessories and Buying Notes

Buy the version that includes the transit FlexFrame bracket or order the bracket separately. Confirm it is included before ordering, especially on Amazon bundles where the included accessories vary by listing.

Add a 4-foot steel-braided cable for the front wheel. Kryptonite sells these as standalone accessories and in some combo bundles. It adds minimal weight and closes the wheel-theft gap that a U-lock alone cannot cover.

Lubricate the cylinder with graphite powder or PTFE lubricant every few months and after any heavy rain exposure. Keep a spare key in your delivery bag, not on the same keyring as the primary.

Register the New York lock serial number on the Kryptonite site immediately. No registration means no theft protection coverage. Two minutes to register, potentially thousands of dollars in coverage.

Wrap-Up

The Evolution Mini 7 is the right everyday lock for most delivery riders. It is light, credibly rated, and fast to use across dozens of stops per shift. Step up to the New York Fahgettaboudit Mini when the bike value, the stop duration, or the local theft environment demands stronger protection. Use the Series 2 as a starting point when budget is the binding constraint.
